Why did you start Levy Lighting NYC?
I felt the creative side calling me. I was working as a liaison between a fixture manufacturer and lighting designers, utilizing my technical knowledge to translate the client's vision into reality. But I wanted to work with the entire gamut of lamps and fixtures in order to fully exercise my imagination in the service of clients. I love "painting" the "canvas" of space with lighting that's designed to create a mood and enhance people's lives.

What goes on in your mind when a client brings you to a space?
Wherever I go, I visualize a space from a lighting point of view. Whether it's an event or an architectural site, I look at the space through the medium of light. The minute I walk into a project, a variety of lighting design possibilities enters my mind. These ideas are tailored to achieve the goals of each client.

What differentiates Levy Lighting from other lighting design firms?
Three important points keep us in the forefront of the lighting design field.

The first is that we are innovative and creative. We have no standard formula. Each job that comes to us demands a fresh approach and is based on the unique parameters of the space and its functions. This perspective stirs our designers' imagination, challenges our inventiveness and produces exemplary sites.

The second key is that I remain personally involved in all aspects of every project. I verify and approve each fixture and lamp selection. Whatever comes out of Levy Lighting is correct and complete, down to the details. I ensure the client gets optimal results.

The third major differentiator is experience. For two decades I have been in the gratifying position of being able to express my love of light in both the architectural and theatrical arenas. It's very exciting for Levy Lighting to create designs that merge the two idioms. Architectural projects often demand distinctive light elements, such as LEDs and colorful lighting, handled most beneficially by theatrical instruments. Alternately, for special occasions and events, such as the J-Lo perfume product launch, we were able to integrate small, clean white architectural fixtures into custom-fabricated columns from which stars were projected onto walls. The effective mix of theatrical and architectural instruments could not have happened if Levy Lighting did not have total command of both mediums.

What services do you offer?
Levy Lighting will specify and implement your entire lighting project. We will consult with you and then create an outstanding design. We specify all fixtures and lamps in a detailed key, including a complete light plan illustrating the location of each fixture, beam spreads, color temperatures and power consumption. If required, Levy Lighting will order the entire lighting package, from fixtures to control systems. A scaled mock-up can also be constructed. We will program all controls and design pre-set scenes timed to your requirements. Site visits by our crew of skilled technicians ensures correct installation, fixture placement and focus. Levy Lighting goes out of its way to assure client satisfaction.

What kinds of budgets can you work within?
Levy Lighting works with a wide range of budgets and projects, from affluent and opulent to moderate and avant-garde. We specialize in tailoring specifications to fit demanding budgets. Often, Levy Lighting specifies simple industrial fixtures that are not expensive, and uses them in creative ways. It's an exciting challenge to create designs where the fixtures merge with the architecture as well as come in on budget. We heavily research fixtures, enabling us to always have at our command the most creative solutions to both architectural and budgetary challenges.
